SOLID LIGHT
IThe object illustrated
here is a prototype for a sculptural object that works as a solid
three-dimensional display. The acrylic rods rise seemingly haphazardly
from a flush surface into the third-dimension. The end points of the
rods effectively create a three-dimensional array of pixels. A dynamic,
computer-generated image is projected into the base of the object
lighting up the rod tips as prescribed by the underlying software. The
prototype shown has a resolution of 24x16x4 pixels, is limited in its
display capacity, but demonstrates a striking light quality and the
great potential of creating large scale systems using this technology in
the context of sculptural installation.
This experimental display was created by Bill Keays at the MIT Media Lab
while doing research in John Maeda's Aesthetics and Computation Group (ACG).
It was proposed as an interactive sculptural installation destined for
the Korean Telecom headquarters in Seoul.
