FABRIX
This prototype represents an effort to develop interfaces where there is a high affinity between the physical device manipulated by the user and the virtual model being manipulated in 3-space. This is accomplished by using stretchable fabric as a hand input device. As the user manipulates the interface, the distortions in the fabric are observed by a video camera and are used to alter a three-dimensional model. The model being manipulated in the image here consists of a series of suspended objects which are connected to each other by invisible, virtual springs. The elastic quality of these springs recalls the similar property in the fabric thus creating a deep level of association between the real and virtual realms.

This device was developed by Bill Keays at the MIT Media Lab as research in John Maeda's Aesthetics and Computation Group (ACG).
